12 step facilitation

What is Twelve Step Facilitation?

Recovery is a lifelong journey, and Gateway assists all patients during their treatment stay to pack a tool kit and draw a map to keep recovery on track. Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) is an evidence-based curriculum demonstrated through much research, including the eight-year multi-site Project MATCH post-treatment outcome study, to be effective in significantly reducing subsequent use. The goal of 12 Step Facilitation is simple: Facilitate active involvement in a 12-step fellowship (TSF Manual), exampled by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and others.

As part of the treatment program offered at Gateway, all patients are encouraged to attend twelve-step meetings, onsite and in the community, as a component of the service model. Twelve-Step Facilitation is an internationally utilized clinical curriculum delivered by a counselor which provides education regarding how patients can incorporate 12-step groups into their personal recovery plan, coaching on engagement, as well as exploration of ambivalence and past experience.

Benefits of Twelve Step Facilitation

  • Explanation of the 12-step concepts, the history and role in recovery
  • Active support of initial involvement in 12-step programs like AA/NA
  • Opportunities to discuss experiences from 12-step meetings
  • Reduction of anxiety about attending 12-step meetings
  • Creation of a forum to ask questions and explore concerns

Benefits of Attending 12-Step Meetings after Treatment

  • Support and fellowship – Attending meetings builds a support system and relationships with others with shared experiences.
  • Structure and routine – These meetings give individuals a fixed meeting to attend and add structure to their days.
  • Accountability – Individuals will be held accountable for attendance and their work toward lifelong recovery.
  • Availability and access – Twelve-step meetings are available at many times of the day, nearly everywhere, and do not require medical insurance or attendance fees.
  • Guidance – Many groups encourage those who are newer to recovery to develop a relationship with individuals who have been in recovery for a longer period of time for support.

“Recovery from an alcohol or other substance use disorders can require significant lifestyle changes. Although there is no single route to recovery, having a healthy peer support network is oftentimes vital to the development of a recovery-based lifestyle,” says Dr. Mark Zissman, program director at Gateway Gurnee and Lake Villa. “Many people feel anxious about the prospect of developing new relationships with other people in recovery that they can both identify with and utilize for support. Twelve Step Facilitation group can help patients that are interested in the 12-step support gain familiarity with the basic tenants of a 12-step foundation, and develop the connections they need to maintain lifelong recovery.”

Spent some time here and got some great tools to help me in my recovery. My counselors in the women’s unit were great and supportive. Love the monthly alumni meetings after treatment, great way to stay connected.

A little over 7 years ago I decided to seek treatment for alcohol and drug addiction and chose this facility as a place to try and arrest my disease and I have been clean and sober ever since. After 30 days inpatient treatment and 9 months outpatient I was able to achieve that goal. I recommend this facility to anyone who truly wants freedom from active addiction.
