Gateway Foundation Lake Villa offers treatment programs for adult men and women as well as adolescent males through the Young Men's Program. In this program, teen boys and young men receive the specialized care and education they require to succeed during and after this life transition. The peaceful location in the heart of Lake County provides the opportunity to recover from addiction amid the serenity of a countryside atmosphere. Lake Villa additionally features a wide array of healthy lifestyle activities as well as an indoor gym with weights and cardio equipment. After treatment, Lake Villa’s alumni continue recovery with the support of a highly active and welcoming alumni community.

Gateway Foundation Lake Villa is situated on 43 beautiful acres on the shores of the Fox Lake.

Karen Wolownik Albert, LCSW

Karen Wolownik Albert joined Gateway Foundation in 2010 and has more than 20 years of experience in behavioral health. Prior to joining Gateway Foundation, Karen worked in a variety of outpatient and residential settings.

She is an experienced trainer and has presented at national conferences on a wide array of topics. Karen is on the board of directors of the Lake County Opioid Initiative and is also a co-chair of the Treatment, Recovery and Harm Reduction Committee and a core team member in the development of the A Way Out Program, a law-assisted diversion program in Lake County. In addition, she is a member of the Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force and serves on the committee of the Chicago Area Opioid Task Force.

Karen earned both her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in social work degrees from the University of Michigan.

Keith Sarpolis, MD

Dr. Keith Sarpolis has over 37 years of diverse experience focused on substance use disorder and internal medicine. He approaches healthcare through a holistic perspective, believing that treatment of both the physical and psychosocial aspects of a patient’s health is critical.

Dr. Sarpolis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.


Lake Villa Staff

The Gateway Foundation Lake Villa clinical team consists of highly credentialed and experienced counselors and therapists. Primary counselors are either certified alcohol or drug counselors (CADCs) or have earned a clinical license. All counselors are trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and use creative, energetic and engaging techniques during group sessions.
